I bought the Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque about 6 weeks ago from Cloré Beauty Supply in Mississauga (GTA), when it was on sale from $18.99CAD to $15.99CAD. I have always wanted to try this product, as some of my favourite bloggers (MahoganyCurls, Prettywitty77, The Happy Hair Show, etc.) have given positive reviews and when i saw that it was on sale, i just had to buy it.
Shea Moisture is known for its use of natural ingredients and absence of chemicals such as sulfates and parabens which contributes to dry hair.
The masque claims to ‘deeply moisturizes and repairs’ hair suffering from damage (incl. chemical overprocessing). A closer look at the ingredients show hair-loving ingredients such as argan oil, sea kelp and vegetable glycerin. Shea Butter is is also the 2nd ingredient on the list, which further highlights the quality of the product.
I like the colour, consistency and overall packaging of the product. The masque is thick with a subtle smell, and i like the fact that it is easier to scoop out of the plastic. To test the product, i skipped my usual coconut oil prewash treatment and deep conditioned with the masque after shampoo (ORS). I followed the instructions as specified and covered my hair with a plastic cap for about 40 mins. I rinsed out the masque and followed with ORS conditioner and cold rinse.
When i felt my hair, i didn’t feel the same softness as my usual honey + olive oil treatment. My ends felt a little dry, but it was manageable, so i blow dried and styled. By the end of the week, my ends were so dry that i had to bag them till my next wash to prevent breakage. I was quite unhappy about this, but i gave the product another chance. This time, i added honey and olive oil to the treatment. After wash, i got amazing results! My hair felt so moisturized and silky. I followed the same styling as previous week and my ends remained moisturized for the entire week (yay!)
Overall, i think it is a great product. To get the best result, i highly recommend mixing the masque with a natural oil (coconut oil/olive oil) and a humectant (honey). I won’t be purchasing the masque anytime soon, as i already get the same effect from my conditioning treatment, but i will recommend it to healthy hair care newbies with dry or damaged hair. I also want to try other products like the Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Gel Souffle and the Curl Enhancing Smoothie from the Shea Moisture line.
